The City of Yellowknife Fire Division is offering free FireSmart home and property assessments for Yellowknife and N’dilo residents.
The Fire Division has trained Home Ignition Zone (HIZ) Specialists available to conduct an on-site assessment. This will provide specific recommendations that residents can take to increase their property’s resilience to wildfire.
FireSmart guidelines recommend vegetation management within the Home Ignition Zone to reduce the threat of wildfire to the structure and/or structure fire to the wildland. The HIZ consists of the Immediate Zone (Structure and 0 - 1.5m from structure), Intermediate Zone (1.5 - 10m from structure), and Extended Zone (10 - 30m+ from structure).
Vegetation management options are proposed to residents to reduce the threat of wildfire to developed areas; however, they do not ensure structure survival under all hazard conditions.
