Pet Protections
Note: the City of Yellowknife only has responsibilities for dogs, not all pets and animals.
Yellowknife is known for being a dog-loving city and is home to a variety of pets.
With access to our vast trail systems and unique activities like skijoring, there's no shortage of adventures you and your furever companion can go on.
However, to keep you and your pet safe, residents must adhere to legal requirements regarding licensing, vaccinations and more.
It’s a privilege to own an animal, and it is the owner’s responsibility to ensure its safety and wellness.
Service Animals are welcome in all City of Yellowknife facilities; please let staff know if we can help in any way.
Owning a pet in Yellowknife also comes with several considerations:
- Dog Licensing: All dogs over six months must be licensed and renewed annually. One can obtain a license at City Hall after filling out an application form.
- Animal Hospitals are limited: Currently there is one (1) pet hospital in the community.
- Homing Challenges: Especially in rental units. Many landlords are not pet-friendly.
- NWT SPCA assists with spay/neuter loans and foster programs.
