The City of Yellowknife (the City) would like to assure residents that despite the increasingly smoky conditions, our community is not currently at risk due to the ongoing wildfires. As a result of strong westerly winds, NWT Fire had previously forecasted smoky conditions for the city going into this weekend.

What are we doing?

City staff and contractors continue with proactive work to expand firebreaks and install sprinklers. Residents are reminded to avoid work areas and follow all signage.  These measures are precautionary, and more information on the situation will become available as it develops. The City is proactively working with the GNWT and other partners at this time to monitor and assess risk and take precautionary measures.

What can residents do?

The City urges residents to remain vigilant and keep fire safety a priority. Respect the fire ban that’s in place within and outside the municipal boundary and refrain from throwing cigarette butts or using equipment that sparks, like ATVs and dirt bikes, in areas with brush. Residents looking for more information on firesmarting their own properties can find information on the City’s website

Be Prepared

Emergency situations can be confusing and disorienting.  Reduce stress by being prepared.  Information about emergency preparedness can be found at www.getprepared.gc.ca.

Wildfire Smoke
For more information on how to deal with wildfire smoke please visit the GNWT’s website.  Due to the current smoky conditions in Yellowknife, the Fieldhouse is open for those looking for relief from the smoke. Free access to the indoor playground and walking track is available. This free access is being provided to encourage safe exercise for those at the greatest risk including children, elderly and at-risk populations and is available to all residents.

The Yellowknife Public Library and Visitor Information Centre also remain open for free public access during regular operating hours.
