The City of Yellowknife would like to advise residents that firesmarting work has commenced in the community.

Heavy equipment will be operating in the sand pits to expand firebreaks.  Residents are asked to avoid the work area and follow all signage.  City staff have removed sprinklers from community parks and will begin installation in the Kam Lake area today.

The City wants to stress that our community is not currently at threat.  These measures are precautionary, and more information on the situation will become available as it develops. The City urges residents to remain vigilant and keep fire safety a priority. The City’s Evacuation Framework Overview can be found on its website, and additional information about emergency preparedness can be found on the GNWT’s and Federal Government’s websites.

Residents looking for more information on firesmarting their own properties can find information on the City’s website.

The City will also begin to once again open the Fieldhouse for those looking for relief from the smoke when the air quality hits “high” – 7 or higher - on Environment Canada’s Air Quality Health Index. Free access to the indoor playground and walking track will be available. Community members will be notified when free access to these facilities is in effect via the City’s social media channels. This free access is being provided to encourage safe exercise for those at the greatest risk including children, elderly and at-risk populations and is available to all residents.

Note that due to the current Air Quality Health Index, free access to the Fieldhouse track and indoor playground is now in effect, until air quality improves.

The Yellowknife Public Library and Visitor Information Centre also remain open for free public access during regular operating hours.
