Due to the current extremely dry conditions, the City of Yellowknife is implementing a fire ban that will be in effect starting Friday, July 19, 2024 at 12:00 p.m. (noon). The fire ban prohibits open air burning and discharging of fireworks within city limits, including the use of approved fire pits, and will remain in effect until further notice.
The use of camp-stoves, enclosed BBQs, and Canadian Standards Association (CSA) approved propane-fueled appliances are permitted. Outdoor propane-fueled burners are also permitted for heating and/or cooking, but must be used within the confines of a fire pit.
“Due to the increasing fire danger in the region, a fire ban has been put into effect. The fire ban is a proactive measure to reduce the risk of fires starting from campfires, bonfires or other open sourced flames within city limits. We all have a role to play in preventing wildfires, and keeping our community safe,” said Yellowknife Fire Chief, Nelson Johnson.
Information about fire bans and the fire danger rating can be found on the City of Yellowknife’s website under Wildfire Updates.
