Homelessness is a reality in communities across Canada and the City of Yellowknife (the City) acknowledges its impact on our community. The City continues to work alongside the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) and community organizations towards finding both short-term and long-term solutions.
On August 16, 2024, Mayor Rebecca Alty met with Premier R.J. Simpson, Minister Lucy Kuptana, Minister Lesa Semmler, and Minister Vince McKay to discuss the recent tent encampment established in downtown Yellowknife. Both governments affirmed their commitment to ensuring the encampment population, as well as neighbouring residents and businesses, are safe and supported. Both governments recognize the temporary nature of the current encampment site, and steps are being taken to find another solution.
City officials are attending meetings hosted by the Government of the Northwest Territories and several organizations involved (including the RCMP, Salvation Army, Yellowknife Women’s Society, and Home Base) to share information and coordinate efforts with respect to the latest encampment.
The City would like to assure residents that it is working within its authorities and resources to keep all residents safe. Please review this fact sheet for more information on the City’s initiatives to support the homeless community.
