From October 2024 to January 2025, the Solid Waste Facility (SWF) has been actively managing a subsurface landfill fire. Such fires are not unusual in landfill environments, particularly during dry conditions or when there is an accumulation of organic waste. We are issuing this media advisory now to update the public on the ongoing management and safety measures regarding the subsurface landfill fire and to inform them of potential access restrictions at SWF.
Early detection and monitoring work included excavating the burn zone, applying water, and collaborating with contractors and environmental inspectors. Proactive measures included consultations with the GNWT water license inspectors and the WSCC to discuss safety and mitigation strategies. The area involved is not known to have hazardous materials and has been identified as having construction materials. The City is advancing air quality monitoring through engagement with regulatory partners. Surface water runoff from firefighting efforts is being carefully monitored through regular assessments by landfill personnel and environmental staff.
The City will continue to monitor the site closely, ensuring safety protocols are followed and that the situation remains under control. While the SWF remains open for public access, residents are asked to be mindful of the restricted areas. Closure of the facility may happen on short notice with updates provided through the City’s website and social media channels.
The City will continue to provide updates as circumstances change. We appreciate the community's understanding and cooperation during this time.
