The City of Yellowknife (the City) would like to advise the public that extinguishing efforts will commence at the Solid Waste Facility starting today, Wednesday, January 22, 2025. This operation marks a significant step towards the full extinguishment of the ongoing subsurface fire at the facility.
The City is prioritizing resource needs to ensure the safety and effectiveness of the firefighting efforts. This initiative is guided by the Yellowknife Landfill Control and Risk Reduction Plan (2007) and the guidelines set by the Solid Waste Association of North America.
While firefighting activities are being performed, the affected area of the Solid Waste Facility will be closed to the public. For the time being, the rest of the Solid Waste Facility will remain open during regular operating hours from Tuesday to Friday. The facility remains closed on weekends until the incident is resolved. A temporary closure of the entire facility may be considered at a later date if warranted.
Clear signage and barriers will mark the restricted area to prevent unauthorized access. Please be aware that there may be increased smoke and a smell emerging from the site of the incident as work is being conducted. The City continues to closely monitor air quality alongside regulatory partners.
