On March 17, 2025, the Yellowknife Fire Department (YKFD) will commemorate the 20th anniversary of the tragic deaths of Lieutenant Cyril Fyfe and Firefighter Kevin Olson. A memorial ceremony will be held to honor their sacrifice while responding to a structure fire at the Old Airport Road on March 17, 2005. Both Lt. Fyfe and FF Olson lost their lives when the roof of the burning building collapsed. LT. Fyfe, who had served with the YKFD for 18 years, passed away in the hospital a few days later, while FF Olson, a new recruit, tragically died at the scene.
The ceremony will take place at the YKFD Memorial Park, where at 10:00 a.m., flags will be lowered to half-mast as a solemn tribute to the two fallen firefighters. This annual memorial provides the public with an opportunity to reflect on the legacy of first responders, who face immense risks daily in service to our community, and to honor the bravery and dedication of all members of the firefighting profession.
The public is warmly invited to join us at this meaningful ceremony to pay their respects.
