The City of Yellowknife invites all residents to participate in its annual reconciliation gathering to create a vision for what Reconciliation looks like in Yellowknife, and what it should entail moving forward. The event will begin at 7 p.m. on August 29, 2023, at the Tree of Peace Friendship Centre. This evening will be facilitated by Tanya Tourangeau and Dëneze Nakehk’o and will include an overview of what actions the City has undertaken to date, opportunities to share information and ideas about potential future City actions, and discussions on how we advance reconciliation efforts in the community. A survey is also open on the City’s PlaceSpeak page for public input.
Background: On April 11, 2023, Council updated the Reconciliation Action Plan. Previously in April 2022 it had been released for public review and engagement on how Yellowknife can collectively advance reconciliation in Yellowknife.
- The Reconciliation Action Plan is a living document that includes current and future actions, can be amended/added to at any time, and will be reviewed annually;
- The City of Yellowknife released its Walking Together Reconciliation Gathering 2022 What We Heard Report in 2023 to summarize key findings from its Annual Reconciliation Gathering in August 2022.
On June 28, 2021, City Council approved the City’s Reconciliation Framework and 2021 Reconciliation Action Plan,
- The Reconciliation Framework outlines the high level, principles-based approach to how the City will work to advance Reconciliation; this is a standing document that should be reviewed in three to five years;
The City recognizes it is a colonial government located on Chief Drygeese Territory, traditional unceded lands of the Yellowknives Dene First Nation. Over 24% of Yellowknife’s population is Indigenous, and as the capital of the Northwest Territories, our city is a cross-roads for many Indigenous persons coming from different parts of the NWT and beyond.
The City hopes residents are able to join this event to participate in this meaningful and important conversation. If you have questions, email communications@yellowknife.ca.
