Run Informed. Lead Prepared.

Serving on Council is an important responsibility, but the realities of the role, the expectations, and the path to getting there are not always clear.

To help residents better understand municipal leadership and the realities of serving in elected office, the City of Yellowknife is launching Candidate College, a new pilot initiative that provides practical insights into local government, the municipal election process, and the responsibilities of serving on Council.

On June 4, Candidate College will offer residents the opportunity to hear directly from elected officials and Administration, ask questions, and gain practical insight into what it means to serve as Mayor or Councilor. Topics will include candidate eligibility and registration, election rules and timelines, governance, budgeting, by-laws, decision-making, and the time commitment associated with serving on Council.

"Serving on Council is one of the most visible forms of community leadership, yet much of what the role involves happens behind the scenes," said Stephen Van Dine, City Manager. "Candidate College is an opportunity to pull back the curtain on local government, help residents better understand the realities of elected office, and support informed participation in the democratic process."

Residents are encouraged to register in advance to help the City plan for attendance. However, registration is not required, and residents are welcome to attend on the evening of the event.

Attending Candidate College does not represent a commitment to running for office.
