The Yellowknife Fire Division received a call for service to 992 Gitzel Street on Tuesday, January 9, 2024, at 7:10 p.m., as a fire was reported at this structure.
The initial attack crews were not able to make entry into the structure, as the fire had burned through the floor and was located in the crawl space. Crews repositioned themselves and attacked the fire from the crawl space.
The fire spread through the walls of unit 992 and into the attic space. Crews accessed the fire through unit 991, and successfully contained the fire to units 991 and 992. A thorough walk-through of the building was done to ensure the fire was completely extinguished. During this assessment, the fire was found in the wall spaces between the two units. Aside from the fire noted in the wall spaces, no additional flames or areas of concern were identified.
Due to the nature of the fire and layout of the building, the Yellowknife Fire Division was called back multiple times to manage additional flare-ups at 991 and 992 Gitzel Street. Crews were able to access both units to extinguish the remainder of the fire.
The incident has been turned over to the Office of the Fire Marshal for further investigation.
