Dog Impound Fee Increased

The City of Yellowknife (the City) would like to remind the public of the increase in the dog impoundment fee, which took effect on January 1, 2025. This fee increase was approved by City Council in December 2024.

Current impoundment fee: $250/day per dog

The dog impoundment fee applies to dog owners whose pet is being held due to being separated from their owner.

The City is advising residents and businesses that the Solid Waste Facility (SWF) will be closed on weekends for the month of January as part of ongoing measures to manage the subsurface landfill fire. This decision allows the City to focus resources on addressing the situation safely and efficiently. Subsurface Landfill Fire Mitigation Efforts Update at Solid Waste Facility

From October 2024 to January 2025, the Solid Waste Facility (SWF) has been actively managing a subsurface landfill fire. Such fires are not unusual in landfill environments, particularly during dry conditions or when there is an accumulation of organic waste. Reaching Home Funding Available

Near the end of 2023, the City of Yellowknife (the City) secured a four-year extension on their federal Reaching Home funding agreement. From April 1, 2024 to March 31, 2028, the City will continue to receive funds annually to address homelessness and housing needs in Yellowknife.
