The Municipal Enforcement Division is responsible for the enforcement and administration of the Dog By-law, within the City of Yellowknife. The Dog By-law deals with dog ownership, control, cruelty, distress and licensing requirements. Municipal Enforcement Officers are trained and equipped to deal with any sort of complaint or call involving dogs.
Please call (867) 920-2737 for any complaints about dogs and a Municipal Enforcement Officer will follow up. If it is an emergency and life/safety are at risk, call 911 or (867) 873-2222 for medical responses or (867) 669-1111 for police responses and then call Municipal Enforcement.
Dog Licensing
All dog owners must register and licence their dogs that are over six months old in accordance with Dog By-law No. 4755. Licences can be obtained at the Municipal Enforcement office at City Hall or at Great Slave Animal Hospital at 129 Kam Lake Road. Please call us at (867) 920-5630 with any questions during business hours. All dogs must also be vaccinated against rabies.
- Dogs cannot be at large (off leash), except in designated off leash areas,
- Dogs cannot pursue or bark at any vehicle on a highway (road) so as to constitute a nuisance ,
- Dogs cannot pursue or bark at any person so as to constitute a nuisance,
- Dogs cannot disturb the peace and quiet of any person by howling, whining or barking so as to constitute a nuisance,
- In determining whether barking is reasonably likely to annoy or disturb the peace of others consideration may be given, but is not limited to the: i) Proximity of the property where the Dog resides; ii) Duration of the barking; iii) Time of day and day of the week; iv) Nature and use of the surrounding area; and v) Any effect of the barking.
- Dogs cannot enter into any park, playground, or other public place where signs erected by the City restrict or prohibit such entry,
- Dogs cannot enter any cemetery,
- Dogs must have a valid rabies vaccination certificate,
- No dog shall bite any person without provocation,
- Dog owners must pick up after their dog(s) and carry a bag or other means to do so.
